185. (House of) Wax Skull

Dripped Wax on Board (approx. 7in x 7in). I used 6 white 7" pillar candles to make this. The black/gray wax was created by tilting the candle up and allowing the carbon soot (see comment below) to mix in.

Saying that the 'carbon' mixes in is a little innacurate. The wax is made of carbon, and when it fully combusts into carbon dioxide, it flies away as hot gas. But when you tilt the candle, the soot that appears is still carbon, just it's an unfully combusted intermediate between the wax and carbon dioxide stages due to the lack of oxygen you created.

Interesting...

So how long did it take? Given that you had to wait for the wax to melt and drip off? And how does that relate to the time it would take to make a similarly sized sketch?

Many of your fans are too much into stats and details. This is an awesome skull-admire it! Let it BE!

Thanks for the clarification David F, I must admit I was trying to use a shorthand to keep my note brief and figured it would make sense. Also, still jet lagged!

It took about 2 hours. A similar sketch done loosely could take as little as 15 minutes or so.

I'm glad you like it Debra Kay. I don't mind the questions, but thanks for the defense!

If I had a wax museum, I'd display this at the entrance with him saying, "Only you can prevent wax museum fires!"

Nice work with the actual depth and shading.
